EU Delays Tariffs on US Goods as Trade Talks Continue Ahead of Trump’s Deadline

EU Extends Tariff Pause Amid Ongoing Trade Talks with US

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Sunday that the EU will continue preparing countermeasures while prioritizing a diplomatic resolution in its trade dispute with the United States.

"At the same time, we will continue to prepare for the countermeasures, so we’re fully prepared,” von der Leyen stated during a press conference in Brussels.
“We have always been very clear that we prefer a negotiated solution,” she added. “This remains the case, and we will use the time that we have now until the 1st of August.”

The EU’s decision to extend its pause on retaliatory tariffs follows U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement on Saturday that his administration plans to impose a 30 percent tariff on exports from Europe and Mexico starting August 1.

In March, the EU had announced retaliatory tariffs targeting €26 billion ($30 billion) worth of U.S. goods in response to Trump’s earlier duties on steel and aluminum. However, those measures were paused for 90 days in April after Trump delayed the implementation of his proposed “reciprocal tariffs.”

The EU’s temporary suspension was due to expire at midnight on Monday.

EU trade ministers are expected to meet in Brussels on Monday to evaluate possible responses to the latest U.S. tariff threats.

White House Economic Adviser Kevin Hassett said Sunday that President Trump was dissatisfied with the “sketches of deals” proposed by U.S. trade partners so far, stating that their offers “need to be better.”

These tariffs are real if the president doesn’t get a deal he believes is good enough,” White House Economic Adviser Kevin Hassett told ABC News’s This Week. “But conversations are ongoing, and we’ll see where the dust settles.”

The European Union, collectively, is the United States' largest trading partner.

According to Eurostat, the EU’s statistics agency, U.S.-EU trade in goods and services reached €1.7 trillion ($2 trillion) in 2024.
